How to Hear the Holy Spirit

the Holy SpiritTo be in love and fortify our relationship through the power of Christ, we make Jesus the center of our lives and the Lord of our coupleship. This brings divine help into every situation. But how does Jesus deliver the help? Through the Holy Spirit.

The key to a joyful, permanent marriage is a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit of Christ and a marital relationship that relies on each other to hear and discern the Holy Spirit, in good times and in bad, especially in the worst of times.

Jesus told us (in John 14:16-17,26), “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will be with you forever; that is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you…. The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

But how do we know when we’re correctly hearing the Holy Spirit, and it’s not just our own imagination or what our sweetheart wishes to be true?

For the next few weeks, I’ll post short videos on this topic in these “Reflections for Couples”. They are from the Good News Ministries Paracletia Course, “How to Hear the Holy Spirit”. As always, I’ll include questions and ideas you can share with your sweetheart to bring the teachings to the heart of your relationship.

Here is the first one.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have I ever experienced a change in my life because I consciously and deliberately asked the Holy Spirit to fill me and activate me?
  2. Does my sweetheart sometimes show wisdom that probably came from the Holy Spirit? What made it seem like it was from the Holy Spirit?

Strengthen your relationship:
Pray together: “Come Holy Spirit, fill us anew with your presence, your wisdom, your guidance, and your help in every way that we need it. We received You during the Sacrament of Baptism. Lord Jesus, stir up within us the fullness of life in Your Holy Spirit.”

Next, share with each other who the Holy Spirit was to you as a child, what you think about the Holy Spirit now, and what you hope to gain by exploring the topic “How to Hear the Holy Spirit”.
