We women who are a bride of the beloved man with whom we chose to spend our life, since we are Christians, we are also brides of Christ. And you men who are the beloved groom, as Christians, you are representatives of Christ the Groom; the Holy Spirit is your guide for serving your bride as Christ loves the Church (Ephesians 5:25-27), just as Jesus was guided by the Holy Spirit.
Seen in this light, our relationships with our sweethearts are more precious than we usually think about. The way that I love and serve my husband, Ralph, is how I love and serve Jesus. Remembering this teaches me how to be a better wife to Ralph and a better Christian as well. How Ralph loves me and serves me is how he represents Christ and teaches me who Jesus is and what he truly is like.
Of course, the imperfections we have make us fall far short of true brideship and groomship. We need to overlook a lot of faults in each other to experience Christ in each other. This is why it’s so extremely important for a marriage to be sacramentalized by the Church. It’s also why both spouses need to be doing personal examinations of conscience daily and utilizing the Sacraments of Confession and Eucharist to repent and grow stronger spiritually. These are resources that God has provided so we can be the bride and the groom of Christ that God commands us to be.
- How clearly do I see that the way I treat my beloved is how I treat Christ?
- How has my beloved revealed Christ to me?
Strengthen your relationship:
Tell each other what it means, for you, to be a bride or groom of Christ. How does it make you feel to have a role in representing Christ to the other? Pray together, asking the Holy Spirit to help you look past each other’s faults and to remind you that you are Christ’s representatives called to minister to each other in every interaction.
