Meditate well on this: Seek God above all things. It is right for you to seek God before and above everything else, because the majesty of God wishes you to receive what you ask for. This will also make you more ready to serve God and will enable you to love him more perfectly. (Saint Paschal Baylon)
God has more love to give us than we ask for. With God, there is always more. He is infinitely good! His love has no limits!
Daily we experience limitations on love. We don’t receive from our family as much love as we long for. Not even our sweetheart loves us perfectly enough to satisfy us fully. This is why we must — absolutely must — seek God first, above all else and everyone else.
Much of our unhappiness comes from looking for God’s love in the imperfect love of our sweetheart, family, and friends. Oh, his love is there, in them, but rather than accept their limitations, we want more. God designed us to want more. God designed us to need his love above all other loves, because we will never get enough from anyone else.
When we’re unhappy because of the lack of sufficient love from others, we need to spend more time with God. More prayer time. More attending daily Mass to receive the Eucharist, if it’s available. More singing along with praise and worship songs that we download or buy to lift our spirits closer to heaven.
Seek God before and above all else. Meditate on the majesty of God. Ask him for more love, and he will give you more. And thus you will love him more perfectly, more fully. And in this exchange of radical love, you will have more love to give to your sweetheart.
- How much time each day do I devote to God — praying, thinking about him, listening for his voice, sensing his nearness, etc.?
- What do I admire in my sweetheart’s relationship with God?
Strengthen your relationship:
Plan an activity or attendance at an event to do together that will put you consciously into the presence of God. Then pray together, asking the Holy Spirit to open you more fully to the love that God has for each of you.
