The vows we make in the wedding ceremony are knots that we freely and gladly desire as we bind ourselves permanently to our beloved. Then, there are other knots — the complications that inevitably occur, which tie up our relationship in the twists of misunderstandings, hurts, and fears.
For the sake of maintaining the holy knot of love, we need to unravel the knots that interfere with love. We need to set our relationship free from anything that binds it to sin and to emotional unhealthiness.
Praying together daily loosens these knots. Seeking the Lord’s help together loosens them further, and even when one spouse gets a head start while the other is still tied up in knots, the Lord, as the sacramentally-present third partner in marriage, begins to help immediately.
The third step is to listen humbly and carefully for the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Doing what the Spirit of Christ inspires us to do will unravel the now-loosened knot.
For assistance in this process, Pope Francis has recommended a little-known Marian devotion that he wants to spread throughout the world: “Mary, Undoer of Knots”. This title for the Blessed Mother originated as early as the second century. In Germany, there’s a painting of “Holy Mary, Our Lady Undoer of Knots” by artist Johann Georg Schidtner, made around 1700, which inspired the young priest Jorge Mario Bergoglio. It shows Mary untying a knot on a long white ribbon while crushing the evil serpent.
From the earliest days of the Church, Christians committed themselves to Mary’s intercession when confronted with difficult situations. Mary, who cherishes and supports holy marriage and holy families, is highly motivated to untie the knots we experience as couples today.
- What knots have been tying me up?
- What knots are tying up my sweetheart?
Strengthen your relationship:
Use the sacred Prayer to Mary, Undoer of Knots
Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love,
Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need,
Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children
because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy
that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes
upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life.
You know very well how desperate I am, my pain,
and how I am bound by these knots.
Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted
the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children,
I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life.
No one, not even the Evil One himself,
can take it away from your precious care.
In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.
Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power
with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus,
take into your hands today this knot.
