God’s dreams for your marriage

Knowing God's dreams for marriage

One of the secrets to a successfully happy and fulfilling marriage is knowing the difference between God’s dreams for your relationship and what the world is trying to influence you about romantic relationships. What the world insists to be right and good is much more unloving, much more unsatisfying, much more detrimental — in the long run — than what it seems to be.

“Brothers and sisters: I proclaim and testify in the Lord that you must stop living like the Gentiles, with the futility of their thinking; that is not what you learned from Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him. Truth is in Jesus. Put away your former, worldly way of life, which was corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Put on the new self, which was created by God in righteousness and holiness through the truth.” (Ephesians 4:17,20-24)

God has given us his commandments to make our lives better, not more difficult. Jesus has given us his example of faithful love to make our relationships better, not to burden us with heavy crosses. The Holy Spirit has given us teachings about sex, marriage, adultery, divorce and annulments, through scriptures and Church writings, to make our romances — culminating with the ultimate romantic relationship with one, permanent spouse — to make our dreams for love come true, not to ruin our fun.

The key to a better marriage is studying together what God has revealed about marriage and what his dreams are for your marriage. Individually, we are all responsible for how much we avail ourselves of this information, regardless of whether or not our sweethearts study it with us. However, the more we journey as a couple in the path of discovery and growth, the closer we become and the easier it is to turn hardships into blessings with the Lord’s help.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How much time do I spend getting to know what God’s dreams are for my married life?
  2. How can my beloved help me grow in awareness of God’s plan for our relationship?

Strengthen your relationship:
Pray together to discern and remember what opportunities are available for learning more about the Bible and Church teachings that will enhance your relationship. After discussing ideas that come to mind during the prayer, plan an action step.
