Remember when you first began dating your beloved and everything else seemed less important? One very important indication that marrying this person was/is right for you is the shared feeling that there aren’t enough hours in the day and opportunities in the schedule to be together as much as you want to be together.
Your love for each other overwhelmed all other desires.
And then normal life sets in with all of its distracting demands.
Proof that you have a mature love is that you can continue being there for one another despite all other distractions, even when you cannot continually focus on each other.
The problem with this, however, is that we can become too accepting of loving each other in the background, safe in the knowledge that we are loved and have love for our sweetheart even while busy with activities that keep us apart. It becomes easy to neglect our relationship, easy to push aside our inner longing to spend more time as the focus of our beloved’s attention, and worst of all, easy to forget how important it is to make our sweetheart the focus of our own attention.
Is it difficult to take time each day to share these daily Reflections for Couples and dialog on the reflection questions? If it is, then the previous paragraph is all too true for you.
The good news is: Your love relationship is the center of Jesus’ attention. He will guide you through the restoration of and the protection of a deep love for each other that overwhelms all other interests and activities.
- When was the last time you felt like you were the center of your beloved’s attention? How did it help you?
- When was the last time you made your beloved the center of your attention? Did you enjoy it? Why?
Strengthen your relationship:
Pray together for the Holy Spirit to guide you in planning a romantic date that frees you from all other distractions. Make it for some time soon. Plan a romantic date and make it a time away from all other distractions. While on that date, talk about the feelings you have for each other, or a shared dream, or anything that focuses on each other in an uplifting way.
